Taryn was born on December 24, 1992, to Jeff and Connie Hatcher in Derlan, New Jersey. She was raised together with her elder brother, Kyle Hatcher, who graduated from the Naval Academy and has now become a helicopter pilot in the United States Navy.
She grew up watching sports and developed a strong love for them. Her grandpa played football, and her dad played basketball. Even her brother is a hockey player, and Taryn herself was in ballet, jazz, and tap as a kid. Taryn also got into soccer later in her life. She used to attend a ton of sports events, live events, and Navy games of her brother. She wanted nothing more than to be a sports reporter; it has been her dream since childhood.
When she was 10, she watched a Duke-UNC basketball game with her dad and commented on the excitement and passion broadcaster Dick Vitale brought to the game.
She said: “I remember saying, ‘Can you imagine being someone who gets paid to do that, to watch and talk about it?’ And my dad was like, ‘Well, you could do that.’ I didn’t know the route to get there. Delran is small, a lot of people do what their parents did, it’s one of those towns. No one did anything like this. At 10, everything seems possible, and then I just didn’t change my mind.”
She continued, “I always hoped, at some point in my life, I might be fortunate enough to cover the teams I loved growing up in front of my family and friends… Sometimes, I still can’t believe I get to do this.”
Taryn’s knowledge and passion for Philly sports and her ability to create content for multiple platforms are valuable skills that allowed her to make an immediate connection with fans. In a short span of time, Hatcher’s popularity has grown, with the notoriously tough Philadelphia fans approving of her contribution to the broadcasts.
This South Jersey native has throbbed the hearts of many people with her beauty and charm. She has been a hockey fan her entire life and sees herself as a storyteller who can bring a human side to the game at times when fans want more access than ever to their favorite stars.
Taryn graduated from Rutgers University with two degrees in journalism, Mass Media Studies, and Political Science. She always had a clear idea of what she wanted to do. Taryn started paving her way slowly for a career in sports while she was still in college. She worked for iHeart Radio as a social media and production intern in 2013.
In the same year, she got an opportunity to intern with Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia, currently known as NBC Sports Philadelphia – her current employer. To build her experience, Taryn completed a third internship in 2014 at the CBS Corporation in the sports department.
In her senior year, she moved from intern to a full-time employee when she was hired by the Big Ten Network (BTN) as a freelance sideline reporter for NCAA basketball. Straight out of college, Taryn was hired by Hawaii News Now in Honolulu as a sports anchor and reporter and had to move nearly 5,000 miles away from home.
There, she co-hosted and co-produced “Nick Rolovich Show,” a weekly half-hour program on the University of Hawaii football team. Later, she joined NBC Sports Philadelphia in the summer of 2018 as a multi-platform reporter and host.
