Inday Roning is a dumpster diver (i.e., a person who checks trash cans to collect food and items that can still be eaten and used). In this way, she gets fruits, vegetables, and other food she serves to her family.

The items that are commonly found in the dumpster are fruits, vegetables, meat, organic eggs, processed food such as sausages, bottled juices, condiments, and snacks. There can also be branded make-up items, chips, bags of chocolates, noodles, brand-new novels, and even electric equipment such as hair dryers.

Inday saves a lot of money because, by dumpster diving, she gets what her family can eat every day. She said that she would save $1,500 or PHP75,000 per month on food alone.

She also said that she goes mainly near grocery stores and supermarkets because when there is one rotten item in a bunch of food, they normally throw away the whole batch, even if the rest is fine.

Inday commented that she is not worried that the food she brought home might be dirty or spoiled. She said, “We have never brought food that is spoiled because we make sure that the food is wrapped and never been opened.”

And before she cooks the items found in the hunt, Roning cleans them by soaking them in baking soda and vinegar. She also makes sure that she checks the expiration dates of the items to find out if they are still safe to eat. Besides being prudent, she is also generous.

Inday said that she shares with other dumpster divers what she collects and puts other food and utensils in the blessing boxes. If she gets hold of opened food, she feeds it to animals or uses it in fertilizers for their crops.

Inday Roning was featured in the “Eat Bulaga” segment ‘Bawal Judgemental’ in May 2021, where she shared her story of how she was inspired to do a dumpster dive. She said: “I started doing this because I was attracted and shocked by the amount of food being thrown away, and I have also seen many things thrown away on the road.”

Inday opined that dumpster divers should be rewarded as they save food from being wasted. She said that her husband supports her, too.

Her husband commented: “My wife is a very good cook, and she helps in saving money in our food budget. It’s really cool, and it stops the stuff from being wasted, just going to the dump and getting thrown into the garbage… we get vegetables, sometimes pizza, sometimes hotdogs… many different things. It’s never the same thing all the time. So, it’s kinda interesting. I’m proud of her. She’s doing a great job, she’s really enjoying.”

As they save on food, the only thing Inday Roning and her husband should worry about is the expenses—such as milk and vitamins— for the baby.

As Inday Roning works as a pet nanny & as a driver in the morning, she goes dumpster diving at night after the shops close. She is also a YouTube vlogger, creating content as a dumpster diver while searching the trash for anything usable or edible.

She grew up on a farm, and that’s why she values food so much. She voiced: “Let’s be careful with the food we eat. We will not waste because these foods can still be used, and many others need food now.” Inday Roning’s words show that being practical is more important to her than pretending to be rich and full of false prestige.

Inday Roning advised those who want to become dumpster divers. She said: “There is wealth in the trash. So, my advice is let’s see and let’s dive. Just don’t go to the ‘No trespassing’ areas when you see no trespassing signs… But [the] dumpsite diving is not forbidden. And remember that there are other dumpster divers too, and the unspoken rule is ‘first come, first serve’ when digging.”
